We received a message on 30 September 2009, from cousin Gary Morgan Ennis that his mother, Neva Miriam Scruggs “Scrubbie” Ennis has been in very ill health recently. In his message....

Mother had an "event" around Labor Day which put her in the hospital for about three days. The doctor on duty told me that she had a 'heart attack'. In any case she is back in Fidelia Eckerd Living Center and doing fairly well but certainly not as well as before.

She has both good and not so good days and she is still clear about most things but her time here seems to me to be ebbing away. And she is not in any pain for which I'm thankful.

Jeanne Suzanne and Tom Yancey came up to visit last week and Mother very much enjoyed their time together.

Our dear Cousin Scrubbie was born 14 August 1907, in Gainesville, Florida, to Brick Pomeroy and Sarah Fay Carmichael Scruggs. Scrubbie’s mother Sarah Fay was the daughter of William Spencer and Manora Alzada Summers Carmichael. Sarah Fay’s older sister was Neva Kate Carmichael, our own Grandmother Neva Kate Carmichael Johnson.

Cousin Scrubbie is now 102 years old and lives in Fidelia Eckerd Living Center in Glenville, NC. She lives near to her son and daughter-in-law, Gary Morgan and Dorothy Lucius ("Dottie") Bassett Ennis. (Dottie is daughter of Julian Morris and Neva Carmichael Johnson Bassett - Uncle Julian and Aunt Neva.) Family members may recall that Gary and Dottie put on a joyous 100th birthday party for Cousin Scrubbie other family came up from Birmingham to be with her on her birthday. Here is the story and some photos of that wonderful event.
