A word from Jean Johnson...

Please sponsor me to benefit Japan Earthquake and Pacific Tsunami Relief!

Jean.WOK.2005
Dear Family and Friends,

Will you sponsor me in the 35th Annual World Oyama American Cup Knockdown Karate Championship at Samford University in Birmingham, AL on April 30, 2011? Your tax-deductible donation goes to the AMERICAN RED CROSS FOR JAPAN EARTHQUAKE AND PACIFIC TSUNAMI RELIEF.

No, I am not competing in this karate tournament. I do ask you to sponsor my demonstrations with the other World Oyama Black Belts during this exciting American Cup Championship. ALL funds that I raise through your sponsorship will benefit the American Red Cross for Japan Earthquake and Pacific Tsunami Relief!

Please make out your tax-deductible check to the AMERICAN RED CROSS and mail to:

      World Oyama Karate Organization
      1804 29th Avenue South
      Birmingham, AL 35209

Specify "Japan Earthquake and Pacific Tsunami Relief"in the lower left "memo/for" line. Also please include a note (or
this form) with my name so that I will know you are sponsoring me with your donation. We are having a little friendly competition to see who can raise the most! :-) The Japanese people greatly need our help! ANY AMOUNT YOU CAN GIVE WILL BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!

Bonus for you!

For a donation of $50 or more (and for every $50), you will receive a FREE TICKET to the American Cup Championship! That's a $20 value!!

ALL profit proceeds from this year's World Oyama American Cup Championship are going to the American Red Cross to benefit Japan relief. I really do hope you can come to the American Cup and bring the family. You will be amazed at the fast action and supreme skill of the knockdown fighters! These are the world's best full-contact, knockdown karate fighters, and they will be competing bare-knuckled and bare-footed with no chest guard, shin guards, or helmet. Some of them are, quite literally, international knockdown karate champions! You might even see some of your friends and neighbors competing in the semi-knockdown bouts.

For those of you in Alabama, Pete and I look forward to seeing you at the 35th Annual American Cup Knockdown Championship on April 30, 2011 at Samford University's Seibert Gymnasium. Semi-knockdown bouts begin at 10:30 a.m.. We'll see you there.

If you choose to sponsor me, thank you very much! Your generosity and support are greatly appreciated!

What is World Oyama Karate?

World Oyama Karate is "a classic, full-contact, Japanese style of Karate."

Visit the official website of the organization at www.worldoyama.com to learn much more about the history, style and leadership of this karate style. You can also get information there about the World Oyama dojos (schools) and events all over the world. You can even read some newsletter articles by Saiko Shihan Oyama - a little FREE advice! :-)
Why do you train in World Oyama Karate, Jean?

"You're a 60-year-old housewife and you do WHAT??" That's the reaction I get from some people when they first find out about my training in the full contact, traditional Japanese style of World Oyama Karate. Most of you reading this message know that I have trained in karate for quite some time, but let me explain why. By the way, Pete is a loving, self-confident husband who is not "threatened" by any of this. He, too, wonders sometimes why I do it. ;-) I am grateful for his understanding and support for all these years.

Both sons David and Seth trained in World Oyama Karate when they were young children. I had been watching them train week in and week out as I "warmed the bench." One year, Seth was very involved in playing football, and the extra exercise in World Oyama Karate was just a little too much. But I could sure use it! I asked Saiko Shihan Oyama if I could finish Seth's contract. Thank goodness he said yes. That was 17 years ago... can it be?! I have been privileged to train at the Homewood Honbu (International Headquarters) with Saiko Shihan ever since. I am honored to be a Ni Dan (2nd Degree Black Belt) now in the World Oyama Karate Organization.

Training in World Oyama Karate has taught me patience, appreciation for hard training, and respect for my instructors, my fellow students and for myself. These are qualities that are valuable far beyond the place where we train. I have definitely grown through the cultural experience. Karate has improved my physical strength and flexibility, of course, but it has has also strengthened my self-confidence and character. Karate makes you challenge yourself and carefully examine your strengths and weaknesses. And that makes you grow, mentally and physically. Without a doubt, karate (along with loving family and friends) greatly helped me in recovering from a nasty automobile accident in which I was involved almost two years ago. That was hard work, but the return to good health was a very gratifying experience. For all of this, I am thankful for the World Oyama Karate Organization and the masterful teaching of Saiko Shihan Oyama. I would recommend World Oyama Karate for anyone, regardless of age or condition! As Saiko Shihan says, "JUST SWEAT!"
Can I send my donation check to you?

Yes. Make out your tax-deductible check to the AMERICAN RED CROSS. Put "Japan Earthquake and Pacific Tsunami Relief" in the lower left "memo/for" line.

Send to:

      Jean W. Johnson
      3716 Old Leeds Rd.
      Birmingham, AL 35213-3818

I will make sure that your check is included with all the World Oyama American Cup sponsorship checks and sent to the American Red Cross as part of our World Oyama American Cup fund drive package.

Thank you for your support and generosity for the Japanese people!
Why can't I just send my donation directly to the American Red Cross?

You can. We want to see that the American Red Cross Japan Earthquake and Pacific Tsunami Relief Fund receives the most money possible. The Japanese people desperately need our help!

However, we are working to put together these donations in one package that will come from the friends and family of those participating in the World Oyama Karate American Cup. We would love to see your donation be a part of that gift. I would greatly appreciate it if you could make your donation through our World Oyama donation drive. It's tax deductible either way! :-) Thank you very much!!
Can my business participate in this Japan Relief fund drive?

Yes! All profit proceeds from the American Cup will go to the American Red Cross Japan Earthquake and Pacific Tsunami Relief Fund. That includes the money received from business advertisements appearing in the American Cup program.

The American Cup program is given to every fan who enters the door. Your advertisement would be seen by many, many people. The long history of the American Cup indicates this will be well over a thousand fans. The American Cup is a special 35th Anniversary event. The American Cup always gets good media attention, but the World Oyama Karate Organization is working extra hard this year to get good pre-event coverage both in print and broadcast media. Bottom line - this year's American Cup attendance is expected to be the highest in many years. If you advertise in the American Cup program, your good name and the name of your business will be associated with this worthy and much needed fundraising effort.

To place an ad in the American Cup Program, download this instruction sheet and ad layout page to help you prepare your ad. (Note: The tournament is called the "Ultimate Challenge" on these pages which was its name in earlier years, but this is information for the "American Cup" tournament.) Mail with your check to:

      World Oyama Karate
      1804 29th Ave. South
      Birmingham, AL 35209

Your print-ready ad must be received by World Oyama Karate by April 8, 2011 to be included in the 2011 American Cup program. Call the World Oyama Honbu (Headquarters) at 205 879-4841 if you have any questions. Thank you for your support!
